Libraries are amazing. They are a great place to get unique resources and build a community whilst providing other council services depending on your local council. Built to be accessible and open for the public, try using the resources available to help you study!

Libraries help develop research skills, well-being, independent learning, life skills, media and information literacy with personal and social development. Research has shown links that relate the use of libraries closing the attainment gap between disadvantaged and SEN children and their peers. [1]

Here are the main benefits you can get in your local library:

  1. Use of computers

Some councils allow you to login and book a PC – there are usually charges for using the PC however, there are concessions available depending on the service. With councils offering the first hour of use free and then a charge afterwards.

  1. Free Wi-Fi

If you don’t need to rely on a PC and you have your own device then finding an area to sit and access the web is easier than ever.

  1. Photocopying, printing and scanning

Usually at a low cost with professional printers you will be able to print documents, dissertations and reports. Many libraries have the added service to laminate your printing too. This is great if you prefer having something physical than on a screen.

  1. Hiring rooms

There are hiring room services in many libraries where you can book for a fee to organise meetings or private study areas.

  1. Events

Many events and opportunities are available in the library. For example, having a local business working in the library. I’ve used the BIPC (Business and Intellectual Property Centre) events at my local library to help with developing this business. There would definitely be something that interests you and discussion groups about movies or other topics. If there isn’t something you’d like why not make it. We offer our tuition services at the local library too!

  1. Accessibility

Libraries are equipped with specific access arrangements for those with disabilities such as: an accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible spaces, specific reader spaces, accessible toilets, video screen readers, magnifying glasses, audio services. Please feel empowered to go to your library the staff are usually very helpful!

These are just a few factors which are common in libraries. For more details use your local council website to see what services are unique to you and where your local ones are!
