Key to Success: 6 Habits of high-achieving students

3–4 minutes

Mindset Approach

Your educational journey will have many setbacks and failures. Points where it’ll be harder to continue and work forward. Your mindset and approach to these push-backs will set you apart from other students. Learn to accept these barriers and work forward to overcome them while maintaining an optimistic attitude, and acknowledge what has been difficult. This will be great in order to work more effectively in the long term.

Your mindset will also influence how you approach these challenges. The ideal would be to work towards them and seeking them, resulting in feeling both achievement and mastery. Conversely, being avoidant and moving away from challenges will do the opposite and increase the likelihood to give up.

Similarly, learn to acknowledge when things go well and still maintain consistency going forward, while adapting your goal to increase mastery.

Wherever you are in your journey, these beliefs can change with consistent work and practice. Being able to consider your effort and work towards something, being comfortable in the uncomfortable environments and using that emotion to work in a positive way towards your goal is the ultimate key to success.

Active learning

This is the process of actively participating in activities. Betotally mindful and dedicate your thoughts and actions to that specific activity. If you are distracted, mindfully bring your mind back to the present moment and refocus.

It also consists of taking initiative and responsibility for your learning journey. If there are areas which you notice are weaker ask for help or use a variety of methods such as – brainstorming, group work, mind maps, testing, summarising, vocalising concepts to others. With the overarching goal of improving your understanding further.

Timetables and consistency

The process of making the timetable helps to gauge: how much time you have; what you need to do in order to reach your goals and a route on how to get there.

Timetables assist in evaluating your priorities ensuring efficient time usage. You understand what you’d need to know and by when, specific deadlines and the route to get to that point. This will also help to communicate to others such as family too when you’ll be busy and when you can help out, it will also help to keep you accountable to your goals. If there is a moment where you’re behind expectation you can query why and troubleshoot early so the small problem doesn’t expand into a big one.

Workspace environment

This can be something out of your control to an extent as a student. A good environment will not have a high noise level, distractions from technology and instead have great lighting, all the equipment you need and enough space to work on. This may not be possible at home. It can be useful to see if there are any local study groups, library spaces, friend’s houses, school space that you could use on a regular basis that would be more suitable to your needs. Otherwise, trying to communicate to family that you are trying to work and making the best out of the hand you’ve been dealt.

Balance

Balance stands for both spending time on education and your other hobbies and interests. Meet friends and build relationships whilst still working towards your educational goals. It also includes having a varied diet and helping to keep things fresh and to avoid being burnt out as well as enjoying your time and your youth!

Planning for the future

Yes, we may not know what we’d like to do at a given point. However, there are aspects which we can think about in general. This can be what type of life you’d like to live. What do you need to do now to make that life possible? Do you want to go to university or college?

Having a rough guideline of where you want to be can be your north star and give you a big target to aim for. So when the times get tough and it is difficult to stay motivated you have that dream that you can reach for.
